The Role of Retrofitting in Strengthening Place Attachment and Pro-Environmental Behavior: A Case Study of Kampung Biru, Banjarmasin
Main Article Content
Abstract
This study examines the impact of retrofitting on place attachment and pro-environmental behavior (PEB) among residents of Kampung Biru, a riverside settlement in Banjarmasin, Indonesia. Retrofitting initiatives in this area included infrastructure improvements, such as waste management, pedestrian pathways, and sanitation facilities, aiming to enhance sustainability and quality of life. The findings reveal that retrofitting significantly strengthens place attachment, particularly in the dimension of place dependence, as residents increasingly rely on upgraded facilities. Additionally, retrofitting promotes low-effort PEB, such as waste segregation and energy conservation, by improving the physical environment. However, its role as a moderating variable between place attachment and PEB was statistically insignificant, suggesting that the scope of retrofitting projects and community perception may limit its broader influence. The study highlights the importance of integrating physical, social, and emotional aspects in urban sustainability strategies, providing insights for future retrofitting policies and sustainable development programs.
